On December 9, 1861 William L. Marley became the first official 治安官 (by appointment of the Territorial Governor) of what was then Ormsby County Nevada, the location of the state capitol. 治安官 Marley replaced his predecessor, John L. Blackburn who had been killed in the line of duty. 治安官 Blackburn’s name is the first etched in the marble of the State Law Enforcement Memorial at the Legislative Complex located directly across the street from where he died.

On July 1, 1969 the city and county of Carson and Ormsby combined, forming a combined municipality. 治安官 Robert 汉弗莱, elected in 1966, would become the first 治安官 of the newly formed county. 同时, the office of the 治安官 was designated a Non-Partisan office for election purposes.

There have been a total of 27 治安官’s in the county history. Of those, six elected 治安官s have been of 卡森城-County. One 治安官 has been killed in the line of duty, 治安官 Timothy G. 史密斯, on December 17, 1867 (excluding 治安官 Blackburn). Two 治安官s have resigned from office; 阿兰W. Nightingill in 1868 and William 奥尔顿 in 1945; and four 治安官s have died while holding the seat, 沃尔特·奥斯汀在1940年, 哈罗德·布鲁克斯在1944年, Lester 史密斯 in 1958 and 霍华德•霍夫曼 in 1966.
